Honesty Lane

A Trip Down Honesty Lane
Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
Most people would agree with Benjamin Franklin’s adage, “Honesty is the best policy”. On the face this seems to be a given. But there are many who don’t practice this. In fact, honesty has been a matter for debate for a very long time. Why do you suppose this is, that some people see honesty as a negative rather than something to be desired? Well, there is no short easy answer to be found in philosophy or man’s discourses on moral ethics. As they say, “one man’s meat is another man’s poison.” In a case like this, the believer must turn to the bible for truth.
What does the bible say about honesty? Let’s look. The only place in the KJV bible that this word is used in in 1Ti 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
1Ti 2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.
1Ti 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;
This verse says that honesty is an acceptable way of life to the Lord. Jesus, in speaking of the sower and the seed says Luk 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.
Here honesty is a part of a fruitful life, that is fruitful in the good works of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament honesty is the equivalent of being just in your dealings. Pro 11:1 A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.
So, just a very quick look at the concept of honesty shows it’s importance to God. I believe the idea is found throughout the bible, if not in word then in deed. There is a story of Jesus regarding the greatest commandment. Mat 22:36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Love thy neighbor as thyself. I’ll put it to you. We can be dishonest with ourselves, even believers can. But, in Christ, we will know of a surety that we are not being honest. The Holy Spirit will poke and prod and let us know we are on the wrong road. We know the truth in ourselves. God’s love for us has given us the ability to be honest with ourselves and with others. Honest in the agape love of Christ. But we still need to be reminded of that, as the bible does many times. Let me finish with one of my favorite verses in the bible. This is a verse that helps us get off that wide road of dishonesty and helps us find the center of the narrow way, Honesty Lane. Php 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
